The Kunnamangalam Judicial First Class Magistrate Court on Thursday (February 5, 2026) released Shimjitha Musthafa, the accused in the case of abetment to the ‘unnatural death’ of Govindapuram native U. Deepak, in police custody for gathering further evidence in the case.

Police sources said she would be taken to Kannur district soon for collecting further evidence on her bus journey to Payyannur. The police had earlier inspected CCTV visuals from the bus in which both of them were found travelling.

Phone examined

A senior police officer associated with the probe said the phone used by the suspect to capture the video of Deepak had been examined by the cyber forensic experts to check suspected editing of the visuals captured before it was circulated on social media. They said the report would be available for verification soon.

Bail plea

Meanwhile, the bail application recently moved by the accused at the district sessions court is set to be considered on Friday. It had been deferred by the court in the wake of the custody application moved by the investigation team.

It was on January 18 that Deepak was found dead at his house near Govindapuram in Kozhikode city. According to police sources, he ended his life after the video reportedly shot by the woman on January 16 alleging sexual harassment during the bus journey in Kannur district was circulated widely on social media.
