The 37th General Body Meeting of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) was held on February 4 at St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bengaluru, centred on the theme ‘Faith and the Nation: The Church’s Witness to India’s Constitutional Vision’.

Over 200 bishops from 174 dioceses participated in the meeting.

The gathering started with a Eucharistic celebration led by Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal, who urged bishops to embody Christ’s love through service to the poor and marginalized.

The inaugural session included the lighting of a lamp and papal messages.

CBCI President Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath emphasized the church’s duty to uphold constitutional values, address emerging challenges like Artificial Intelligence, and strengthen justice initiatives. The biennial report was presented, new bishops honoured, and departed bishops remembered.
