The registration of 807 missing person cases across the national capital in the first 15 days of January, according to Delhi Police data, sparked a political row on Wednesday, with the Opposition Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress accusing the BJP government of failing to ensure the “safety and security” of people.

According to police data updated as of January 26, of the 807 missing people, 509 are women and 298 men. There has been a rise in the number of missing person cases lodged in Delhi over the past five years, police data show.

‘Higher reporting’

“The number of cases reported so far this year is actually less compared with previous years,” Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Devesh Chandra Srivastava said.

“The number of cases reported in Delhi is higher compared with other cities,” he said, adding that the online system of lodging complaints has made it easy for people to report missing person cases.

‘Not normal’

Hitting out at the government in a post on X, former Chief Minister and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal said, “In Delhi, 807 people have gone missing in just 15 days and most of them are women and children. These circumstances are not normal; they are extremely frightening. The safety of people in the nation’s capital has been left to the mercy of God. The BJP has complete power at every level in Delhi, yet why has Delhi become so unsafe?”

Meanwhile, in a letter to Lieutenant-Governor V.K. Saxena, Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav sought the formation of a task force to “investigate the large number of cases of missing children”.
