Food Safety Officers have ordered closure of two supermarkets and a sweet shop in Sivakasi that were found be functioning without the mandatory food safety licence. During a surprise check conducted by the officials, led by the Virudhunagar District Designated Food Safety Officer, S. Mariappan, the officials also found other discrepancies at the supermarkets located on Chairman Shanmugam Road. The officials seized 4 kg of tomato sauce and 3 kg of chips that had passed their expiry dates. Besides, 5 kg of ghee with mislabelling and 3 kg of adulterated tea powder were also seized. At a popular sweet shop located on SIDCO premises on the Sivakasi–Srivilliputhur Road, the officials found that the shop was manufacturing several varieties of sweets though it had got licence to manufacture only two varieties. On another premises, the officials found that sweets were being manufactured despite having licence only for retail sale. The officials seized 20 kg of snacks and 40 kg of sweets that did not have the date of manufacture printed on the labels.
