The Chengalpattu District Police is probing the death of a 15-year-old girl, reportedly after a home abortion attempt went wrong. Police have subjected a 21-year-old man, who allegedly impregnated her, and her mother to interrogation.

The girl, studying in class X, from Chengalpattu, died on Thursday at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH). Police sources said on January 4, she was taken to a private hospital in Chengalpattu as she had a fever.

The hospital staff who examined her confirmed her pregnancy. Since she was 10-weeks pregnant, her family attempted to do an abortion at their home. The girl’s health condition deteriorated, and she was taken to the Government Chengalpattu Hospital.

Later, she was referred to RGGGH and the Chengalpattu police were alerted. On the same day, hospital staff informed the All-Women Police Station, Chengalpattu, which registered a case based on the medical entry.

A senior police officer of Chengalpattu district said a post-mortem examination was conducted to determine the exact cause of death. Preliminary investigation revealed that an adult neighbour, aged 21, was responsible for the girl’s pregnancy. The police have registered a case under POCSO Act against him.

The officer said, ”We are probing what led to the girl’s death. After investigation, we will take appropriate action against whoever is responsible for her death.”
