The Nagapattinam district administration has launched a comprehensive tourism website aimed at bringing all tourism-related stakeholders under a single digital platform and enabling visitors to make informed decisions.

The portal, nagapattinamtourism.com, was recently launched by Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi.

Alongside the website, the district also unveiled a new tourism logo reflecting Nagapattinam’s maritime heritage, resilience, and ecological richness. The wave and fishing boat symbolise the coastal livelihood of the region, the rising sun denotes hope and renewal, the lighthouse represents a forward-looking vision while flamingos highlight the biodiversity of Point Calimere. The logo carries the tagline “Land of Miracles.”

The initiative was taken by District Collector P. Akash. Annly Anna Kurian, Project Lead of the Convergence Team with the district administration, said the objective was to bring tourists, service providers, and other stakeholders on a single digital platform.

Designed as a one-stop repository, the website provides detailed information on religious, heritage, colonial, and ecologically significant locations in the district, along with curated travel itineraries, tourism packages, and visitor guidance. The initiative is part of efforts to strengthen Nagapattinam’s position as a major pilgrimage, heritage, and coastal tourism destination.

Prominent pilgrimage centres such as the Velankanni Basilica and the Nagore Dargah, Chola-era heritage sites, beaches and less known locations are featured on the portal.

Ms. Kurian said the content was developed under the supervision of S. Jeyakumar, heritage expert, with a four-member intern team of tourism and history enthusiasts who mapped sites of tourism, heritage, and religious importance across the district. The listings were vetted by a convergence committee and finalised by the Nagapattinam Tourism Promotion Committee.

At present, the portal carries details of sites related to Hinduism and Buddhism with information on places of worship of other faiths to be added in phases. Less known locations such as Birangi Medu, Kodimara Poonga, and the Dutch Cemetery have been included.

The website lists around 140 locations covering religious centres, heritage monuments, colonial-era sites, and ecologically important areas. It features profiles of 10 eminent personalities associated with Nagapattinam and sections on local cuisine, including prawn vada and Nagore halwa.

A dedicated gallery showcases photographs sourced from local photographers following a district-wide call titled “Glimpses of Nagapattinam,” with due credit given to contributors. The website was developed by Tech Nest, led by Abdul Gani.

Officials said the portal includes a booking-enabled section for tourism packages and trails organised by the district administration and provides links for ferry services operating between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka.

In the long term, the website is expected to evolve into a comprehensive repository hosting updates on tourism activities, investment opportunities and related initiatives, the officials added.
