Mumbai-based Polestar Maritime Limited has placed an order for two 60-tonne bollard pull battery-electric green tugs with Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).

The tugs will be deployed at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority under the Central government’s Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), after Polestar Maritime, which operates in the harbour tug, coastal towing and marine services segments at ports, emerged as the successful bidder for chartering two battery-electric tugs, the CSL said in a statement on Saturday (January 31, 2026).

The vessels will be built to designs from Robert Allan Limited, an international harbour tug design firm.

Construction of the vessels will be jointly undertaken by CSL and Udupi-CSL under a work-share arrangement at CSL’s Cochin yard. The tugs will feature battery-electric propulsion systems, enabling zero direct emissions during harbour operations. The batteries will be sourced domestically.

With this contract, the CSL Group’s order book carries 17 tugs, including six green tugs, at various stages of construction. Commenting on the order, said CSL Chairman and Managing Director Madhu S. Nair.
