62 undergraduate students from 40 institutions across Karnataka and from neighbouring states of of Goa and Maharashtra participated in the week-long programme “Initiation into Mathematics”  which was held at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Dharwad from January 26 to 31.

IIT-Dharwad partnered with the Mathematics Training and Talent Search (MTTS) Trust to conduct the programme. The MTTS Trust is a renowned non-profit educational trust which comprises a dedicated team that has been working for the past 33 years towards improving mathematical pedagogy, a release from IIT-Dharwad said.

This initiative was designed to motivate undergraduate students to move beyond rote memorisation, encouraging a culture of deep critical thinking and logical reasoning. Many participants were also from government colleges across the State, ensuring widespread representation. This marks one of the first major initiatives of its kind to elevate mathematical standards in the region, the release said.

The program concluded on January 31, with students sharing their experience during the valedictory ceremony. IIT-Dharwad director Venkappayya R. Desai highlighted the contributions of Indian mathematicians and the philosophy of teaching and learning.
