Concerns over road accidents and illegal activities linked to eateries functioning round the clock were raised at the Greater Chennai Corporation Council meeting on Friday. VCK councillor C. Ambethvalavan, aka C. Kumarasamy, raised the issue during the council meeting at the Ripon Buildings on Friday. He said biriyani shops operating 24 hours a day were causing public nuisance, particularly during the night. He alleged that a 17-year-old boy had recently eaten at a 24-hour biriyani shop near Basin Bridge, where allegedly illegal drugs were being sold, and later met with a road accident under the influence of drugs. He said such establishments should be inspected and shut down even if they were operating with licence. Responding to the issue, Mayor R. Priya said that shops functioning round the clock would be checked for licence compliance and streamlined.
