A two-day workshop on welding of emerging power plant application materials was inaugurated at the University College of Engineering (UCE), BIT Campus, Anna University, Tiruchi, on Friday.

According to an official release, the programme was jointly organised by the Indian Institute of Welding (IIW–India), Tiruchi branch, and UCE, BIT Campus, as part of the former’s diamond jubilee.

In his inaugural address, S. Sampath, managing director, Velmurugan Industries Pvt. Ltd., Tiruchi, highlighted the importance of advanced welding technologies in enhancing the safety, reliability, and performance of power plant components.

He advised students to hone practical welding skills during their academic years, in order to be prepared for successful careers.

Technical sessions were helmed by veterans from the industry and regulatory bodies, along with senior academicians, including experts from Tamil Nadu Boiler Directorate, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL), Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Schwing Stetter India, and the American Welding Society.

An industrial visit to BHEL ancillary units near Tiruchi was part of the programme. The workshop is scheduled to conclude on January 31.
