According to a press release, the Tourism Department will hold the selection process on February 2 for lifeguards proposed for deployment at Paduvari-Someshwara Beach, Trasi-Maravanthe Beach, Asare Beach, Malpe Beach, St. Mary’s Island, Kaup Beach, and Padubidri Main Beach. The applicants should be aged between 18 and 40 years. They should be physically fit and capable of running for one kilometre and swim a distance of 400 meters. Candidates with health issues will not be considered. Selected lifeguards will receive a monthly salary of ₹14,958 along with Provident Fund and ESI benefits. Interested candidates must report with their biodata by 9 am on February 2 at the swimming pool located near the Mahatma Gandhi District Stadium at Ajjarakad in Udupi. Following selection, the candidates will undergo a six-day intensive training. Meanwhile, clarifying on the photographs showing District In-charge Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar and others not wearing jacket in the boat going to St. Mary’s Island on January 26, Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar said rules currently state that life jackets should be provided to all in any boat and it should be worn in times of emergency. Following capsizing of a tourist boat resulting in death of three persons on January 26 near Kodi Bengre, the District Administration has decided to make wearing of life jackets compulsory for all. The district administration is planning to issue rules for imposing penalty on individuals not wearing life jackets during the boat journey. Meanwhile, the Coastal Security Police (CSP) on Wednesday held a meeting with owners of 40 water sports and tourist boats. In a press release, the CSP said the boat owners were appraised of the directions of Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police issued on Tuesday. They were asked to produce necessary documents and get clearances for boating, Kayaking and water sports activities, the release said.
