Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has urged voters in Kerala to set a model for the whole nation by ensuring 100% turnout in the upcoming Legislative Assembly elections in the State.

Inaugurating the National Voters Day celebrations here on Sunday, Mr. Arlekar said that Kerala, known for its high literacy rate and social reforms, and the progress made in the health and education sectors, should show a way for the nation in this regard. “That should be our target,” he said.

The Governor urged voters to exercise their franchise in a free, fair and judicious manner. The National Voters’ Day is not just a celebration but an effort to raise awareness in the people about their rights, he said. Kerala has 1,579 voters who are over 100 years old, and they should be seen as “icons,” the Governor said.

Speaking on the occasion, State Election Commissioner A. Shajahan said that the responsibility for a “pure and accurate” voters’ list extends beyond Constitutional authorities, describing it as a shared civic duty. Political parties, local administrators, bureaucrats and above all, the citizens themselves, must engage actively in the process, he said. He described the 2025 local body elections – helmed by the State Election Commission – “a testament to robust democratic engagement.” An accurate voters’ list, he said, ensures that every voter’s right to choose their representative is protected and that no person is disenfranchised through oversight or error, Mr. Shajahan said.

Chief Electoral Officer (Kerala) Rathan U. Kelkar, who welcomed the gathering, said the theme of this year’s celebrations, ‘My India, My Vote,’ reinforces the concept that democracy begins with the citizen. The Governor also inaugurated a ‘Virtual Reality Polling Booth’ on the occasion and gave away awards. District Collectors and election officials were present.
