Byrathi Suresh: Mangaluru, five other city corporations to go to polls by April

Speaking at the inauguration of the Mahakalipadpu railway underpass, Mr. Suresh said the MCC and the five other city corporations have not had elected bodies for the past several months. “The Government wants to hold elections by April. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is also keen on holding these elections. In another three months, the elections will be held,” the Minister said. He called on the people of Mangaluru to elect representatives who foster communal harmony.

The five-year term of the Mangaluru City Corporation council, led by the BJP, expired on February 27, 2025.

The BJP sat in the treasury benches of the corporation for the first time by ending the two-decade control of the Congress party in the civic body by winning the election conducted on September 28, 2007. But it lost the council election conducted on March 7, 2013, to the Congress. BJP made it to the council for the second time in the election held on November 12, 2019.

In the last council, and in the 60-member House, the BJP had 44 councillors, the Congress 14, while the SDPI had two councillors.
