A total of 695 persons were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol during special enforcement drives conducted by the traffic police in Hyderabad and Cyberabad over the weekend.

Hyderabad traffic police booked 399 drivers during the two-day special drive on January 23 and 24. Of these, 321 were riding two-wheelers, 31 were driving three-wheelers, and 47 were found driving four-wheelers and other vehicles.

The Cyberabad traffic police, on the other hand, held 296 offenders for drunk driving. The majority of those booked were two-wheeler riders at 231 cases, followed by 47 four-wheelers, 17 three-wheelers and one heavy vehicle.

The police reiterated that driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence and warned that those found drunk driving and causing fatal accidents would be booked under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and carries a maximum punishment of 10 years’ imprisonment along with a fine.

Officials also said that in the last week, from January 19 to January 24, a total of 215 drunk driving cases were disposed of by courts in Cyberabad. Of these, five offenders were sentenced to both fine and jail, eight were ordered to pay a fine and assigned social service, while 202 were fined.
