Former Judge of Madras High Court David Annoussamy passed away at a private hospital due to age-related illness, here on Saturday afternoon. He was 98. 

Mr. Annoussamy is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the town for sometime, said a doctor, who treated him for age-related illness.

An authority on the history of Puducherry, French law and comparative jurisprudence, Mr. Annoussamy had a distinguished career in Puducherry Court, including as Chief Judge, before his elevation to the Madras High Court. His judicial activities lasted for almost 40 years.

He had contributed immensely to the interpretation and application of French law in Puducherry. Author of several publications in English, Tamil and French, Justice Annoussamy served as Vice-Chairman of the Central Administrative Tribunal and Chairman of the State Commission for Consumer Disputes Redressal. He was the honorary president of Alliance Francaise de Pondicherry.

He also headed the nine-member committee appointed to recommend November 1 as Puducherry’s Independence Day. 

He was actively involved in intellectual discourses in the cultural milieu of Puducherry and his contribution towards strengthening exchanges between France and Puducherry was noteworthy.
