The Tirunelveli City police have arrested seven persons for selling illegally Indian-made foreign liquor on Friday.

As sale of liquor in Tasmac shops and bars in hotels had been banned in view of ‘Thiruvalluvar Day’ on Friday, all liquor shops and bars had remained closed.

When the police conducted surprise check in a few areas in Tirunelveli city following information on illegal sale of liquor, the police teams seized 479 bottles of liquor from seven persons. The police teams confiscated ₹6,650 and a two-wheeler from them.

The police also registered case against 16 persons for consuming liquor in public places.

When one of the police teams, while conducting vehicle check intercepted a bike at Ram Popular Junction in Palayamkottai, , the rider reportedly prevented the police from checking him. The police arrested him, who was later identified as P. Muthusamy, 36, of MKP Nagar in Palayamkottai.

As the police checked him, they recovered 240 grams of ganja from him and seized his bike also.

Another police team seized 27 liquor bottles from C. Anand, 32, of Sindhupoondurai near Tirunelveli Junction when the vehicle check was conducted at Oorudaiyaarpuram also near Tirunelveli Junction.

Commissioner of Police, Tirunelveli City, N. Manivannan warned that illegal sale of liquor, banned tobacco products and ganja would be seriously viewed and those involved in this unlawful trade would be detained under the Goondas Act.
