Intensified measures by the Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police to prevent theft of passenger belongings in the Tiruchi Railway Division has helped bring down the crime rate, according to the divisional authorities.

According to data provided by the Tiruchi Divisional Railway, the number of cases of theft of passenger belongings fell to 61 in 2025 from 133 in 2024. Fifty-four criminals involved in the cases were arrested during 2025 against 74 arrested in 2024.

After a surge in theft of passenger belongings in 2024, the RPF and the GRP jointly launched an intense drive at stations and trains to check such crimes. Various initiatives were taken, including strengthening vigil and awareness programmes including display of photographs of the habitual offenders at railway stations, a press release from the Tiruchi Railway Division said.

Payments to contractors, who fail to provide police verification and Aadhaar copies of their out-sourced staff, were withheld.

A RPF Assistance Kiosk was set up at Srirangam Railway station to enable passenger contact RPF personnel quickly, the release added.
