The Suththamalli police have arrested two persons who burgled ₹6 lakh in cash and ₹26 lakh-worth gold ornaments from a house at Suththamalli on January 8. BJP functionary and financier Sanyasi of Suththamalli near here is living in Chennai with his family. When Sanyasi’s 70-year-old mother-in-law Andichi was in the house of Sanyasi, two unidentified persons came to the house and requested her to give them drinking water. When the old woman went inside, the strangers trespassed into the house and allegedly stuffed cloth in the mouth of Mrs. Andichi. They also tied her hands and legs with rope and took 15 sovereigns of gold ornaments she was wearing and ₹6 lakh in cash and another 10 sovereigns of gold from the steel bureau. The crime came to light only when the neighbours came to the house and alerted the Suiththamalli police, who registered case in this connection. After collecting CCTV footages from the cameras fitted in Ponvizhaa Nagar, the police also gathered the details of mobile phone calls made from Ponvizhaa Nagar and the surroundings that led to the arrest of Manikandan, 21, of Annamalai Nagar in Pettai near Tirunelveli and his relative Sundar, 27, of Jeeva Nagar, also in Pettai. During interrogation, police found that the duo had pledged the booty in a private finance firm in Chennai. Efforts are on to recover the stolen valuables.
