The Kurnool IV-Town police on Friday arrested two women from Maharashtra in connection with a theft reported at the APSRTC bus station here on November 30.

According to the police, Sharada, a woman passenger from Koilkuntla, arrived at Kurnool along with her husband from Hyderabad and was waiting to board a bus to her hometown. At that time, two women, posing as passengers and clad in burqas, approached her. While one of them deliberately blocked the footboard of the bus, preventing other passengers from boarding, the second woman swiftly snatched Sharada’s wallet and fled.

The wallet contained gold ornaments weighing about 75 grams. Following a complaint, the police registered a case and launched an investigation. A special team examined CCTV footage from the bus station premises and conducted extensive inquiries in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Vijayawada, and Visakhapatnam.

In view of the Sankranthi rush, special police teams were deployed at bus stations across Kurnool district. During surveillance, the police noticed two women moving suspiciously at the bus station. On spotting the police, the duo attempted to flee but were apprehended by women police personnel.

The accused were identified as Rosie Sultana, 45, and Shaik Rafiqa, 65, both residents of Akola district in Maharashtra. During interrogation, they were found to be habitual offenders who targeted passengers at railway stations and bus stations. The police said the duo was wanted in cases across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. They were later remanded to the Kurnool sub-jail.
