AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj | Photo Credit: File photo The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday said that after Chhath Puja, pollution in the Yamuna has “risen again” as the extra water released to dilute pollutants has been diverted away. “A few days before Chhath Puja, the BJP government at the Centre and in Haryana stopped all irrigation water meant for farmers. At the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana, the entire flow was diverted into the Yamuna so that industrial pollution and sewage waste could be diluted and the Yamuna in Delhi would look clean for one week,” said AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj. Mr. Bharadwaj alleged that, now that Chhath Puja and the Bihar Assembly election have concluded, the extra water that briefly poured into the Yamuna has been rerouted to the Eastern and Western Canals, with pollution returning to its “real level”. Hitting back, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor said Yamuna’s water quality had improved in December 2025, compared to a year ago. “It seems Saurabh Bharadwaj has still not recovered from his electoral defeat, and he is completely frustrated with the BJP government giving the people of Delhi the opportunity to celebrate Chhath Puja on the banks of the Yamuna after the traditional Deepavali festivities,” he said.
