Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan launched the Pongal festival celebrations at the Bharathidasan Government Women’s College on Tuesday (January 13, 2026).

A press note from Lok Niwas said Mr. Kailashnathan, who was accompanied by his wife, Beena Kailashnathan, attended the event as special guests and participated in the festivities, even joining the students in preparing and celebrating Pongal.

A variety of cultural programmes were also staged by students during the event.

The DMK, responding to the call of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, organised ‘Dravida Samathuva Pongal’ celebrations across locations in the city.

R. Siva, DMK convenor and Leader of Opposition led the festival celebrations at the Mariamman temple grounds in Thattanchavady.

The event was also marked by distribution of welfare aid and festival gifts to underprivileged family members.

Around 300 women from the area participated in the ceremonial preparation and savouring of Pongal.

The cultural events that followed featured folk songs, music performances and traditional art forms such as Mayilattam and Oyilattam.
