KCOCA provisions were invoked against Suvin Kanchan alias Munna, Shyam Sundar Shetty and Akshay Poojary. On January 1, three individuals visited Sahajuddin’s house in Angara Gudde, Mulki, whose buffaloes had won prizes in Kambala. They were accused of demanding ₹50,000 from Sahajuddin and accusing him of rearing buffaloes for slaughter. They were also charged with assaulting Sahajuddin and his father, Shamshuddin. On the complaint by Sahajuddin, the Mulki police arrested Kanchan, Shetty and Poojary for offences punishable under Sections 329,126(2),308(4),115(2),351(3) and 3(5) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. In a statement, Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said that in the last 10 years, Kanchan was booked in a total of seven cases, including the extortion case. Of these, Kanchan and seven others were sentenced to seven years’ rigorous imprisonment for the offence of dacoity in March 2022. Kachan was ordered to pay a fine in two cases for the offence of consuming narcotic drugs. The trial is under way in a case of murder and two cases of attempt to murder in which Kanchan is an accused, the police said. Mr. Reddy stated that accused Poojary has faced three criminal cases in the last decade, including charges of extortion, attempt to murder and violations of the Scheduled Caste Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atroicities) Act, with trials ongoing for the latter two. On January 9, the investigation officer submitted a report to the Mangaluru court under KCOCA against Kanchan, Shetty, and Poojary. The court approved it on Monday and ordered the extortion case transferred to the KCOCA special court in Mysuru, Mr. Reddy said.
