Transport Department has formed special teams comprising Regional Transport Officers and Motor Vehicle Inspectors to conduct surprise checks on omnibuses along major routes in Virudhunagar, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts to check collection of exorbitant fares during Pongal festival by omnibus operators.

In a statement, Virudhunagar Deputy Transport Commissioner P. Venkatramani said that the officials would book cases against those buses found to collect additional fare making use of the Pongal festival rush and also for violation of rules.

He instructed the bus operators to immediately stop charging additional fares more than what has been mentioned as fare in their websites and avoid the action.

He also warned that the buses would be impounded if the officials find through the bus passengers about collection of exorbitant fees.

The Deputy Transport Commissioner said that bus passengers can lodge their complaints about exorbitant fares being collected by operators from Virudhunagar, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts by calling 90257 23800 or through WhatsApp messages or voice messages, the statement said.
