In a swift operation, Kothapet police in Guntur district recovered a bag containing gold jewellery worth nearly ₹5 lakh and returned it to a woman passenger within three hours of receiving a complaint.

According to police in a statement here on Tuesday (January 13), the incident occurred on January 12 when a woman, travelling with her small children, boarded an autorickshaw at Pattabhipuram in Guntur City to go to Chilakaluripet. She alighted near Gandhi Park but inadvertently left behind a bag containing gold ornaments in the auto.

Realising the loss shortly afterwards, she searched the surrounding area but could not trace the vehicle. She then approached Kothapet Police Station and lodged a complaint with Circle Inspector Veerayya Chowdary.

Acting immediately on the complaint, the CI instructed crime staff to launch a search. Constables Jani Basha, Srinivasa Rao, Degala Koteswara Rao and Anil Kumar examined CCTV footage in and around the Gandhi Park area and tracked the movement of the autorickshaw. After scrutinising several vehicles, the team identified the auto using traffic police registration details and traced the driver.

The gold jewellery bag was safely recovered from the driver and later handed over to the woman by CI Veeraiah Chowdary at the police station.
