An 80-year-old man was charred to death after a fire broke out in his residence at Kengeri in Bengaluru on February 19.

The Kengeri Police Station has registered a Unnatural Death Report under Section 194(3)(iv) of the BNSS, and initiated an investigation.

The deceased has been identified as Mailarappa (80), a resident of Thimmarayappa Circle at Mylasandra, Kengeri.

The incident is reported to have occurred between 2 a.m. and 2.30 a.m. while the matter was reported to police around 5 a.m.

According to the complaint lodged by Ramya (32), grand-daughter of the deceased, Mailarappa was living alone in a house adjacent to her residence. She stated that her grandfather had been suffering from gangrene in his left leg, which had been amputated, leaving him immobile.

She had been taking care of his daily needs, including food and medication.

On the night of February 18, around 11 p.m., Ramya visited her grandfather to serve dinner. At that time, he reportedly complained of loose motion, and asked for medication.

She procured the medicine and gave him the tablets. Her brother Kumar alias Ramakrishna was also present at the house at that time

Around 2.20 a.m. on February 19, a relative, Bhagyamma, alerted the family that Mailarappa’s house had caught fire. Ramya, her family members and neighbours rushed to the spot and managed to douse the flames. After removing portions of the roof sheets, her husband entered the house and found Mailarappa charred to death.

Police have shifted the body for a post-mortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.

Further inquiry is underway to determine the cause of the fire, and whether any foul play was involved.
