A 25-year-old man was arrested on Monday at the Laxmi Nagar police station after he walked in and confessed to poisoning his mother, sister and minor brother, an officer said. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS, he added.

According to the police, the accused, Yashveer Singh, said at the time of the confession that his mother “had told him to poison the family if it would help him get rid of his financial troubles”.

A police team reached the accused’s Mangal Bazar residence at 5 p.m. on Monday and found the bodies of Kavita, 46, Mukul, 14, and Meghana, 24. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, the officer said. “Preliminary investigation suggests he had poisoned them. More details are awaited,” he said.

The officer added that the accused appeared to have been under prolonged mental duress.

“He was unemployed. His wife had abandoned him and his father had not returned home in the past few months. Over time, he developed serious mental health issues,” he said.
