In a daring incident, two unidentified persons trespassed into a house at Suththamalli near here on Thursday and robbed ₹6 lakh in cash and 25 sovereigns of gold after tying a woman with rope.

Police said BJP functionary Sanyasi, 45, who owns a finance firm in Chennai, lives in the State capital with his family even as his in-laws Mari, 75, and Andichi, 70, are living in the house of Mr. Sanyasi at Ponvizhaa Nagar in Suththamalli near here.

When Mari had gone to get the Pongal gift hamper, two unidentified persons came to his house on Thursday afternoon and asked Ms. Andichi water to drink.

When the woman went inside the house to fetch water, the duo stealthily barged into the house and gagged Andichi.

They also tied her hands and legs and took her gold chain and stud, weighing 15 sovereigns. They broke the steel bureau in the house from where they took ₹6 lakh in cash and 10 sovereigns of gold ornaments. The culprits also damaged the CCTV cameras fitted in the house and took the hard disk before escaping from the house.

The incident came to light only when neighbours came to her rescue and alerted the Suththamalli police.

Suththamalli police have registered a case.
