Tourism Minister R. Rajendran on Friday said that 23,511 college students received free laptops in Salem district.

At a function held at a private polytechnic college, the Minister distributed 859 free laptops and at another function held in a government-aided school, distributed bicycles to 442 students.

Speaking at these functions, the Minister said that considering the future of the students, the State government is implementing schemes like Naan Mudhalvan, Pudhumai Penn, Tamil Pudhalvan, Illam Thedi Kalvi, the Chief Minister’s Breakfast Scheme and the Ulagam Ungal Kaiyil scheme. In the top 100 colleges’ list in the country, 37 colleges are from Tamil Nadu. Likewise, in the 100 Universities’ list, 24 are from Tamil Nadu. In the past five years, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin allocated ₹2 lakh crore in funds to the school education department.

Stating that 23,511 college students received free laptops in the district, Mr. Rajendran said that 7,950 students belong to 23 government and aided arts and science colleges, medical and engineering colleges and 15,561 students from 131 self-financing colleges received free laptops in the district.

In addition to this, 7,713 students will receive free laptops soon. Likewise, in Salem district, for the academic year 2025-2026, a total of 25,159 students, including 11,317 Plus One students and 13,842 Plus Two students, will receive free bicycles and the distribution of bicycles is going on, the Minister added.
