The special sanitation drive being carried out by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has cleared the city of a total 2,005 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste and 670 metric tonnes of construction and demolition waste. In total, sanitation works have been carried out at 1,882 identified locations across the 300 wards, including foot over-bridges, flyovers, parks, and garbage vulnerable points across the city, a statement from GHMC informed. GHMC Commissioner R.V. Karnan, during a review meeting on Wednesday, directed the zonal commissioners to intensify field level inspections and ensure effective implementation of sanitation measures. The meeting, on a video conferencing platform, was attended by Additional Commissioners, engineering officials and senior officers from various departments. Mainly focused on the progress of the ongoing GHMC sanitation drive and other developmental programmes, the meeting emphasised the need for strict adherence to the sanitation drive schedule. Mr. Karnan called for coordinated action at all levels and underlined the importance of creating public awareness on cleanliness and hygiene. On its ninth day, the drive laid special emphasis on the removal of green waste. Since the launch of the programme, extensive sanitation works have been undertaken across flyovers, roadsides, dividers, central medians, kerb stones, lakes, nalas, footpaths, parks, garbage vulnerable points, and locations of construction and demolition waste. Cleaning of transformers and electricity poles has also been taken up as part of the initiative, the statement said.
