The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation (TNCSC) will open 195 direct purchase centres (DPCs) in Nagapattinam district to procure paddy from farmers during this samba season. Of these, 123 DPCs have already been opened. About 4,990 tonnes of paddy has been procured through them and about ₹8.64 crore had been credited to the bank accounts of the farmers, Collector P. Akash said in a press release. The procured paddy was being transported to the storage godowns immediately. An open air storage centre had become functional at Arunthavampulam from February 5. Mr. Akash said all accessories have been mobilised. About 63.73 lakh gunny bags and 81 tonnes of jute cord was available in the district. Paddy from persons outside the district and traders should not be procured at the DPCs. Stern action would be taken against both the seller and the DPC staff concerned if such irregularities were detected, Mr. Akash warned.
