File. | Photo Credit: PTI Around 14% of candidates contesting the upcoming Assam Assembly election have declared criminal cases against themselves. Of these, 11% have declared serious criminal cases, according to an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). Out of the 722 candidates fighting this Assembly election in Assam, 102 (14%) candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves. In the 2021 Assembly election, of the 941 candidates analysed, 138 (15%) had declared criminal cases against themselves. Among the major parties, 28 (28%) of the 99 candidates of the Congress and eight (9%) of the 90 BJP candidates have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavit. Eleven (37%) out of 30 AIUDF candidates, six (23%) out of 26 Asom Gana Parishad nominees, two (15%) out of 13 Raijor Dal candidates, two (20%) out of 10 candidates from the Assam Jatiya Parishad, and one (33%) out of three CPI(ML) candidates have also declared criminal cases. Among the major parties, 20 (20%) out of 99 candidates analysed from the Congress and eight (9%) out of 90 candidates analysed from the BJP have declared serious criminal cases. Only two candidates have declared cases related to crime against women. Eight candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section-302) and (BNS Section-103) against themselves.
